About the 2022 Women’s International Champions Cup
The Women’s International Champions Cup returns this summer and features four trophy-winning teams representing the best that women’s club soccer has to offer. The four participants each qualified for the WICC by winning championships in their 2021-22 tournaments, competitions, and leagues.
- The 2021 WICC defending champions, Portland Thorns, qualified as winners of the 2021 NWSL Shield and 2021 NWSL Challenge Cup.
- Olympique Lyonnais, 2019 WICC champions, qualified as winners of the 2022 UEFA Women’s Champions League and 2021-22 D1 Féminine
- C.F. Monterrey will be the first team from Mexico to compete in the WICC, having qualified as the Torneo Grita México Apertura 2021 champions.
- Chelsea FC Women’s will also make their first WICC appearance, qualified as winners of both the 2021-22 FA Women’s Super League and 2022 Women’s FA Cup.
The tournament will take place from August 17-20, 2022, at Providence Park, the home of the Portland Thorns. The tournament consists of four matches played as two doubleheaders. Kicking things off on August 17th, Olympique Lyonnais will face off against Chelsea FC Women’s in an all-European clash followed by an all-North American battle between the Portland Thorns and C.F. Monterrey. This will set the stage for the championship on August 20th, where the winners from the semifinal doubleheader will meet to determine who will be crowned 2022 WICC Champions.
